Volkswagen and Energy Web collaborate on blockchain-powered electric vehicles that use renewable energy

-

Although electric cars should be cleaner than gas-powered ones, there is no assurance that the electricity is generated from renewable resources. Volkswagen (VW) and the Energy Web blockchain have teamed up to create a smart charging solution for individuals who wish to guarantee that it is.

Energy Renewable energy is used to its fullest potential by Web’s “24/7” matching algorithm.

“The purpose of this project has been to showcase that advanced EV charging solutions can empower EV owners to set their own preferences for when and where they get their energy,” said Jesse Morris, CEO at Energy Web. “For instance, they can select to charge using wind and solar resources, from energy assets within a 10 km radius, and target 80% charge by 5pm.”

With VW’s electric SUV ID4, the Proof of Concept solution was tested for three months. The Elli electric charging app from VW was integrated with Energy Web’s solution. VW is looking into adding more functions with a view to scaling it up for production.

In order to investigate applications for electric vehicle charging, Energy Web and VW first collaborated in March 2021.

There are a lot of well-known companies that work with Energy Web. Its public blockchain, which was created from Ethereum, employs Proof of Authority in order to save energy.
